âYeah, letâs!â Joe hit the call button.
The phone rang once and then went straight to a voice mail recording: âThis is Vanessa. Leave a message!â Beeeeep!
Joe hung up quickly. âWhoâs Vanessa?â he asked Madison.
Madison frowned. âVanessa? I donât know anyone named Vanessa.â Her face lit up. âOh, yeah. My momâs hairstylistâs name is Vanessa!â She frowned again. âOr is it Vivian? Or Veronica? Or maybe itâs Janessa, with a J.â
âGreat,â Frank mumbled.
Dogs began barking to the tune of âTwinkle, Twinkle, Little Star.â Joe realized with a start that it was the ringtone on Madisonâs phone. Joe wondered if Mystery Vanessa was dialing Madisonâs number to find out who had called her a second ago.
But the screen flashed: MOM CALLING.
âUh, itâs your mom,â Joe said, handing the phone back to Madison.
Madison glanced at the screen and hit talk. âHi, Mommy. . . . What? No, I didnât talk to a reporter named Luke Jackson. . . . What? No, I didnât talk to a Luke Johnson, either. . . .â
Frank tugged on Joeâs arm and pulled him aside. âYou and I got to the Zombie Mania shoot at, like, ten thirty yesterday,â he said in a low voice. âI remember looking at my watch. Madison got here earlier. Like, before ten. So someone in the crowd could have grabbed her phone and texted the picture to this Vanessa person at ten or so.â He added, âOr Vanessa could have texted it to herself. To her own phone, I mean.â
âMakes sense,â Joe agreed. âMaybe we should add Vanessa to our suspect listâwhoever she is.â
âWeâre missing a Why, though. Why would Vanessa post that picture all over the Internet? Was she Luke Johnsonâs âsourceâ? Why would she say that stuff to him for his article?â Frank mused.
âFrank! Joe!â
The boys turned around. Cissy ran up to them.
âWhatâs wrong?â Joe asked her. She looked shaken.
âI just saw a zombie in the park. It tried to attack me!â she cried out.
